Cases of rats’ attacks on children have become more frequent in the Donetsk oblast. For example, rat attacked Gregery Nahorskiy, 4 near the entrance to kindergarten in the afternoon in Svetlodarsk. “Gregory saw it and became curious. He went to it and rat bite into his forefinger. The boy is taken to the hospital. Doctors assure us we should take preventive measures, because rats can infect people with hydrophobia and many other diseases”, told Sergey Nahorskiy, Gregory’s father.

However, boy’s parents wonder how rat has appeared in kindergarten. As for many-storied building residents located nearby, they have been complaining of rats for a long time already. But municipal service official do not take any measures.

When he was turning over in the morning, it bite him”, explained Marina Mavrova, his mother. “While we tried to take him easy, rat went out the bed. Ukraine boss blames press, Shevchenko rues missed chances

KIEV, Sept 13 (Reuters) - Coach Oleg Blokhin has blamed journalists for Ukraine's disappointing Euro 2008 qualifying campaign, accusing them of putting a curse on his team.
"You guys kept saying I was a lucky coach when we qualified for the (2006) World Cup," he told reporters after a 2-1 defeat by world champions Italy on Wednesday left Ukraine with almost no chance of reaching next year's finals from a tough Group B.

"I think you just put a curse on my team," he added.

Blokhin, who blasted his players for a "shameless performance" in last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Georgia in Tbilisi, again pulled no punches in his post-match comments.

"You can't win if you keep wasting your chances."

Andriy Shevchenko, Ukraine's liveliest player on Wednesday, blamed bad luck for his many misses.

"In some ways, we outplayed them but their better class made the difference in the end," said the Chelsea striker.

"They used their few chances to the maximum while we were just unlucky," added the Ukraine captain, who tested Gianluigi Buffon on several occasions but was only able to beat Italy's keeper once when he equalised in the 72nd minute.

However, it was only a short reprieve for the home team as Italy midfielder Antonio Di Natale scored the winner with his second goal five minutes later.

Naked back is a symbol of honest Ukrainian tax-payer. The supporters of “KUCHMA” bloc have demonstrated it today. They, absolutely naked, have gathered in front of the Tax Administration of Ukraine. They wore only posters and slogans.

“How can we attract authorities’ attention to the reality in the life of ordinary people? Prices are growing. The same situation was only during the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The promises on single tax had not been fulfilled. While authorities spend money taken from our taxes for elections every year we will be deprived even of our trousers,” protesting supporters said.

One of the leaders of “KUCHMA” bloc Lev Mirimsky called the citizens of Ukraine not to pay taxes till the end of elections and to make authorities to report about money of tax-payers.

Former Ukrainian prime minister Julia Timoshenko says her countrymen and women are not having enough sex.

Speaking at an election address for her new political party, she urged the crowd to start working on reversing the country's demographic decline.

Mrs Timoshenko's daughter, Eugenia, 25, last year married former rock singer and market trader Sean Carr, 36, from Yorkshire, after a holiday romance.

When asked if her daughter was following her advice, she declined to comment, saying it was a "private matter".

A Ukrainian man has been arrested after making use of one of the exhibits at a new museum dedicated to the history of the toilet.

The museum, which opened only last week in the capital Kiev and claims to be the first of its kind in the world, has now added "Not for use" signs on all its exhibits.

The toilet museum takes visitors through the entire history of the modern loo from its earliest beginnings as a hole in the ground to modern-day toilets with all mod-cons.

There is even a section dedicated to toilets of the future.

Vassiliy Kovalchuk, 48, who has apologised to museum staff, said: "I didn't realise they were only to look at when I was caught short.

"They told me afterwards visitors are supposed to use the public toilets on the street. I told them I want my money back."

Rotten pickle threat forces Ukraine premier to cancel campaign tour

Kiev - The threat of being on camera alongside jars of rotten pickles forced the cancellation of a campaign swing by Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich through a provincial region, Korrespondent magazine reported on Friday. A politician in favour of government support for big business and closer Ukrainian relations with Russia, Yanukovich had been scheduled to visit the western Lviv province as part of his government's campaign to improve regional support, prior to national elections on September 30.
Yanukovich had been planning to announce the award of some 320 thousand dollars in government aid to villagers in the Ozhidov district to assist with recovery from a July train wreck which caused a phosphorus spill and the evacuation of hundreds of local residents.
Anti-government activists in Ozhidov's town square stymied the visit by setting up stands containing jars of rotten pickles, tomatoes, cabbage and squash to protest the Yanukovich government's alleged failure to respond to the accident seriously.
Pickled home-grown vegetables are a popular Ukrainian food product found in practically every household.
A statement from Yanukovich's press office claimed the prime minister was unable to attend the ceremony in Ozhidov due to heavy traffic on the Kiev-Lviv highway - one of the country's best- maintained and fastest-travelling roads. Motorists told the ICTV television channel traffic was if anything light.
Phosphorus is a hazardous chemical that ignites on contact with air. An estimated 40 square kilometres of ground in the Ozhidov district was polluted by the July 17 spill, and toxic smoke clouds caused by the fire.
Yanukovich on Thursday instructed the country's Minister of Transport Mykola Rudolkovsky to remain at his post despite orders sacking him issued earlier this week by President Viktor Yushchenko, Yanukovich's rival.
Yushchenko cited the phosphorus spill and frequent accidents on the national railroad, which Rudolkovsky's officer runs, as grounds for his dismissal sacking.
Yanukovich on Thursday argued Rudolkovsky has in fact done his job well, and that Yushchenko's attempt to sack him was politically- motivated.
Yanukovich has been the victim of political fall from food products in the past, particularly during Ukraine's 2004 Presidential election when, during a campaign swing through the Ivano-Frankivsk province, a student threw an egg at the Prime Minister, striking him in the shoulder.
Television images of the burly Yanukovich dropping to the ground as if poleaxed when hit by the egg, and later that day from a hospital room claiming he had been a victim of a terrorist attack, undermined his image as a tough politician able to handle crisis.
Yanukovich initially won the October 2004 election, but the supreme court overturned the result in a December finding, accusing his campaign organization of massive vote fraud.
Yanukovich's Regions Ukraine party is set to grab some 22 per cent of the popular vote in the September elections, making it likely the strongest party in the next parliament, according to most polls.

KIEV, September 5 (Itar-Tass) -- Over 280 special line telephones have been switched off at the Ukrainian parliament.

Transport and Communication Minister Nikolai Rudkovsky said on Wednesday the telephones had been switched off on Tuesday evening when the parliament session was in progress.

The special line went dead in the office of parliament speaker Alexander Moroz. The speaker asked Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich on Wednesday not to switch off his telephone.

Yanukovich instructed Justice Minister Alexander Lavrinovich to promptly “prepare a legal opinion for a resolution on the restoration of the special communication system in the administration of the Verkhovna Rada”.

Rudkovsky claims that the lines had been switched off “on President Viktor Yushchenko’s personal order”.

The president considers the parliament illegitimate, which might have been the reason for disconnecting its telephone lines.

Rudkovsky and Emergencies Minister Nestor Shufrich have happened to be in the centre of the growing conflict between the president and the government.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council, chaired by Yushchenko, decided to dismiss Rudkovsky and Shufrich.

In his words, the two ministers had numerous shortcomings. “Rudkovsky did not ensure higher safety of railroads, while Shufrich did not organise the appropriate response to the recent calamities in many Ukrainian regions,” the president said.

But the government has declined to comply with the Security Council’s decision.

Commenting on this decision, Lavrinovich said, “There is no subject for discussion.”

A huge monster with the head of a serpent and the body of a crocodile is rumored to lurk at the bottom of a lake in Western Ukraine. The monster has been frightening residents of a nearby village for more than one hundred years. Now and again the gruesome creature comes ashore and attacks domestic animals. At times it harms humans too. As a rule, locals steer clear of the lake. Researchers keep gathering information in an attempt to unravel the lake mystery.

Quite a few bloodcurdling stories about the monster of the lake circulate through the village. It is said to attack animals and humans. The hideous monster is also said to moan and wheeze at night. The local elderly say that the “lizard” was last seen on the lake shore some 30 years ago.

“The monster assaulted Stepan, a groom. He was tending horses near the lake on that day. Actually, Stepan had too much of a drink so he stretched himself out on the grass and fell asleep. A crocodile-like creature crept on to the bank out of the water, moved up to the guy, and sniffed at him. Mushroom pickers came from the wood at the very moment. They saw that thing and started shouting out loud to scare it off. The monster reportedly opened its month and there wasn’t a single tooth inside,” said the 84-year-old Ivan Kovalchuk, a resident of the village.

It is believed that the first stories about the monster hiding in Lake Somin near the village of Lukiv appeared at the turn of the 19th century. The reference to the monster can be found in a report sent by a village chairman to Warsaw. He wrote that the villagers had not paid a tax on fishing because of a “serpent” which lived in the lake, eating the fishes. The unknown predator also harassed the livestock and locals, said the letter. The authorities had plans to dispatch an expedition to the area to investigate the case. But those plans fell through due the outbreak of World War I.

The German military made an attempt to solve the mystery of Lake Somin during World War II. The Germans used diving equipment and nets for exploring the bottom of the lake. However, their efforts to capture the creature ended in failure, reports Gazeta Po-ukrainski.

Some researchers believe that the lake monster is a huge cat fish. Lots of cat fishes can be found in numerous lakes and ponds located in the area. “Cat fishes can use their big strong fins for dragging themselves ashore. Several cat fishes caught around here were really big. They weighed about 100 kilos each, measuring up to two meters in length,” said Valentin Lyupa, a researcher of “the Somin Monster.”

Other scientists claim that the creature could be a prehistoric freshwater shark which somehow survived the Ice Age. “The archeological finds discovered in the area can back up this version. There’re many reports on fossilized teeth and bones of ancient fishes dug out by locals in their gardens,” said Valentin Volontai, an adviser with the Institute of Archeology under the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.

Lake Somin is located in Polessie lowlands, which formed at the bottom of an ancient freshwater sea. About 300 lakes scattered around the area are the remainders of the sea. Those karst lakes interconnect by means of underground passages and rives.

Lake Somin is 56 meters deep. A number of karst caves lie at its bottom. That is where the monster lies in wait, according to locals. The Polish researchers are reportedly going to give it another try and solve the lake mystery. A special research party is expected to commence work on location in the near future.

Suspected smugglers flying ultralight detained by Ukraine police

Kiev - Three men suspected of using an ultra-light aircraft to smuggle cigarettes from Ukraine into Hungary were detained Wednesday by border police, the Interfax news agency reported.

Officers stationed in the mountainous Mukachevo region of west Ukraine first became aware alerted after 'detecting a suspicious noise in the sky at 4 am.'

Border troops searching roads and fields near the village of Yanush halted a Ford automobile and a GAZ minibus, which carrying three Ukrainian nationals including a registered pilot.

The GAZ-66 also contained a disassembled ultra-light aircraft and eight cases of NEXT cigarettes with an estimated value of 9,000 dollars on Ukraine's black market. The smokes are projected to be worth two to three times that in Hungary, according to the report.

The pilot, a Crimean resident, admitted to police that he was in the air in the morning, explaining that he enjoyed flying in the dark. He denied using the ultra-light for smuggling.

Police said that 'operational information' - a Ukrainian law enforcement euphemism for data obtained from informants or eavesdropping - contradicted the pilot's claim of innocence.

The pilot was charged with illegal border crossing, and all three detainees with smuggling cigarettes. Police seized the vehicles, aircraft and cigarettes.

Smuggling is rampant along Ukraine's rugged western border, where the economies of whole villages depend on illicit movement of goods to and from neighbouring European Union members Poland and Hungary.

The most valuable trafficked goods according to Interpol reports are illegal migrants, cigarettes, narcotics and petrol.

Smugglers commonly use motor vehicles or passenger rail cars to move products, often with the complicity of corrupt officials.

A tightening of border controls on both sides of the frontier in recent years has cause traffickers to transport their goods by increasingly imaginative means including on foot, by pack animal or in small boats - and, now, ultra-light aircraft.

Kiev - Vasyl Tsushko, Ukraine's controversial interior minister, flew to a German hospital by charter aircraft on Friday for treatment for poisoning, according to a close Tsushko associate.

Tatiana Muntian, Tsushko's lawyer and political ally, told Ukraine's Channel 5 television channel Tsushko had suffered "a massive heart attack due to an intentional attempt to murder him by poisoning".

Tsushko in recent weeks had been at the centre of a dramatic spike to tensions in the country's long-running constitutional crisis, by ordering an assault by riot police on a government building to return to office a prosecutor general sacked by President Viktor Yushchenko.

The late May incident was the first-ever case of outright violence between different branches of Ukraine's police forces, as building security guards resisted the assault led by Tsushko.

Yushchenko in retaliation mobilised elements of the army and lorry columns carrying about 3 000 combat troops who were en route to the capital with the mission of kicking Tsushko's men out of the building, when negotiations defused the potentially bloody confrontation.

Tsushko is a long-time supporter of Yushchenko's political opponent, pro-Russia Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich.

Poisoning 'a rumour'

Unknown assailants using dioxin poisoned Yushchenko in September 2004, leaving him weakened and his face pockmarked. At the time, Yushchenko claimed he had been targeted by a foreign spy agency.

Interior ministry officials confirmed Tsushko had suffered a severe heart attack, but described Muntian's claims poison had caused the health problem "at the present moment on the level of rumour".

Muntian for her part was adamant, saying "I saw him with my own eyes and it was obvious the man had been poisoned".

Oleksander Moroz, Ukraine parliament speaker and another Tsushko ally, told the Interfax news agency "I spoke with him today and his condition is stable. I hope he will return (to Ukraine) in two or three weeks." - Sapa-dpa

Circus loses 350kg crocodile

Kiev - Ukrainian air and sea search teams were on the lookout for a Nile crocodile on Friday after the reptile escaped from its circus handlers on a Black Sea beach, the Interfax news agency reported.

The incident took place in a resort district of the port city Marioupol. The crocodile's handler blamed high temperatures for the animal's decision to take to the water.

"It (the crocodile) just couldn't handle the heat," a circus representative told reporters.

Circus managers estimated the carnivore was nearly two metres long and weighed about 350 kilograms.

Beach patrols spotted the croc swimming offshore, but were unable to capture it as the animal would submerge if people or boats approached it, according to the report.

Throngs of beach-goers including women and children were continuing to bathe and play in the surf, despite warnings by loudspeaker of the crocodile's presence in the water.

The incident came less than two weeks after a Ukrainian animal trainer survived a circus bear attack leaving him unconscious and under water for close to four minutes.

That incident took place near the town Novy Rozdol in the western Lviv region after Volodymyr Herbovy, working for the travelling circus Europa, decided to bathe his trained bear Mishka in a lake during warm weather.

The brown bear turned on Herbovy for unknown reasons, but once the trainer was motionless under the water, the animal stopped its attack.

Herbovy survived the near-drowning but was hospitalised. Circus personnel recaptured Mishka the bear without incident.

Temperatures have been unseasonably high in Ukraine since mid-May, in places topping 35 degrees Centigrade. Much of the country's infrastructure lacks air conditioning, resulting in heavily-populated lake and sea beaches during summer months. - Sapa-dpa

KYIV (AP) - A crocodile escaped from a Ukrainian circus into the Azov Sea, a popular swimming and beach area, officials said Friday.

The 1-meter (3.2-foot) crocodile, named Godzi, escaped from the seaside circus in the city of Mariupol on Thursday, said Mykola Ranga, a spokesman for the regional branch of the Emergency Situations Ministry.

He said ministry workers were searching for the crocodile, whose mouth was taped shut, and that it has been seen swimming in the sea, which lies north of the Black Sea between Ukraine and Russia.

Officials issued a warning to area beachgoers, but Ukrainian media reported that many sunbathers and swimmers were undeterred and came to the shore on Friday.

The dreadful incident happened in Poltava: the mother-in-law finished her lustful son-in-law off who had been humiliating his family.

As it became known from sources, long-term family conflict between mother-in-law and son-in-law ended with a cruel murder because male, 37 often drank alcohol, met with his lovers and did not bring up his children.
His wife was rather patient and calm. But mother-in-law was so anxious about her daughter and grandchildren that had been swearing with her son-in-law.

The tragedy happened when male again came home being drunk and turned his wife, mother-in-law and two children out. The pensioner returned home, took a knife in the kitchen and beat her son-in-law with a knife.
Wounded male tried to rescue himself. He ran out to the entryway calling for help. But his mother-in-law ran home down and hit him with a knife for 8 times.

Neighbors had heard the noise and called an ambulance car and militia. But they did not rescue male. He died before the coming of doctors of fatal hemorrhage.
Militia had seen a strange picture: mother-in-law was standing near the bloody corpse and eating the cake. According to neighbors, they saw female was running to the kitchen, took the cake out of refrigerator, returned to the entryway and began to eat.

Currently this female, 56 is detained. She is in the isolation ward. The suspect confessed at the first interrogation she “was dreaming about murder of her son-in-law for a long time”. Law enforcement initiated a suit according to the article “premeditated murder”. Investigation is being carried out.

The Cabinet of Ministers intends to prohibit construction of new houses with a height over 25 floors, declared the Minister of Regional redevelopment and construction of Ukraine Vladimir Yatzuba.

“I promise I will not sign any documents about these constructions” declared Yatzuba.

According to Minister, regulations of these constructions have not been still worked out. Minister is anxious about victims in the case of fires in these skyscrapers.
“If something happens, what will we say then? That we did not have money or helicopter?” asked Yatzuba.

He joked the purchasers of apartments living on will have to get parachutes instead of fire extinguishers. Kyiv city hall officials confirmed Minister’s apprehension. They declared “50 percents of fire protection do not work in the skyscrapers during a fire”.

Kiev - A Ukrainian animal trainer survived a bear attack that left him unconscious and under water for close to four minutes, a local media report said Friday. The incident took place near the town Novy Rozdol in the western Lviv region, after Volodymyr Herbovy, working for the travelling circus Europa, decided to bathe his trained bear Mishka in a lake during warm weather.

The female brown bear turned on Herbovy and forced him under the water, Fakty newspaper quoted witnesses as saying.

The animal abandoned Herbovy after he stopped moving. Passers-by distracted the animal by shouting and throwing rocks.

Vasyl Parashchak, a water services officer for Ukraine's Ministry of Emergency Situations, arrived on the scene and was able to pull the Herbovy out of the water.

A subsequent attempt by the bear to attack her unconscious trainer was beaten off with a fishing pole abandoned by fisherman on the bank of the lake, Parashchak said.

"I hit her several times on the snout, and she went away," he said. "It was not a pleasant feeling to see the bear coming at me."

The emergency worker attempted to resuscitate Herbovy without success. An initial check by an ambulance team arriving on the scene showed the animal trainer's pulse and breathing to have stopped.

Medical workers working overnight brought Herbovy back to consciousness. He was listed in serious but stable condition, and is expected to recover fully, said Olha Sheludko, chief doctor of the Novy Rozdol district hospital.

Another two or three minutes underwater would have been fatal to Herbovy, Sheludko said.

Circus workers recovered the bear without incident. The evening show went on as scheduled, although Mishka did not perform.

Managers at Europa Circus declined comment on the incident.

Leader of the Yabluko Party Mykhailo Brodskyi accuses the eponymous bloc leader Yulia Tymoshenko of her intention to bribe Constitutional Court judges.

Brodskyi announced this at a press conference of the leaders of the Tymoshenko Bloc, of the Our Ukraine People's Union Party Vjacheslav Kyrylenko and of the Narodna Samooborona public and political movement Yurii Lutsenko.

Making use of a halt between speeches of the oppositionists Brodskyi, who was present in the room jumped up and proposed the reporters to give an account of his own, alternative point of view on the current political situation.

"Yulia Volodymyrivna promised me personally a bottle of cognac in case of she fails to bribe Constitutional Court judges and asked me for money to do this," said Brodskyi.

He also accused Tymoshenko of attempts to split the country and push it towards a civil war.

"Hold! You are but forcing events happened in Subdniestria, Kosovo for the country... leave politics, stop yourself until I stop you completely," said Brodskyi.

He also was surprised that Kyrylenko and Lutsenko are cooperating with Tymoshenko.

Brodskyi called Tymoshenko's political force a totalitarian sect.

More than 300 sledgehammer-wielding, mouse-kicking Ukrainians took part in a competition last weekend to destroy computer equipment in the most spectacular way possible.
The First Open Computer Destruction Championship, held in the central Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhya, were organised by a local radio station and designed to raise awareness about the perils of spending too much time in front of a PC, the BBC
reports.

There were three main events: chucking a keyboard, kicking a computer mouse, and the "creative destruction" of computer monitors. Ironically, winners in each category received computer equipment as a prize (but you probably guessed that already).
Competitors told Ukrainian TV that the event helped purge them of computer angst.
Radio engineer Yevhen Hrytsenko, who threw his keyboard an impressive 40.2 metres to win that event, said he felt "liberated from computer addiction".
"Just recently I busted my monitor at home. I was so angry at it, luckily I didn't destroy the keyboard, so I could throw it here today," he said.
Eastern Europe, and the Ukraine in particular, was a breeding ground for the sport of mobile phone throwing, which has now spread internationally.
Anthropologists are yet to explain why a country with one of the lowest GDP (annual income per head) figures in Europe could spawn such a passion for abusing hi-technology equipment.

Here's one for the technically-minded among you to ponder: a Ukrainian "free energy electro power source" which has popped up on eBay.

Quite how the 100kW+ wonder machine works is anyone's guess, and the vendors are remaining pretty tight-lipped on the matter. It doesn't run on petrol or diesel, but does consume 1200m3 of air per hour. Quite remarkably, in can apparently operate simultaneously in a vacuum, which attests to its hi-tech capabilities.

There are, nonetheless, a couple of clues as to the possible power source. First up, the blurb carries this dire warning aimed at preventing purchasers from investigating the machine's innards: "With the purpose to provide technology safety, the case of electric power station will be closed, and at its unauthorized opening electric power station will be self-destructed."
Secondly, the same outfit is punting rather a lot of ex-military Geiger counters.

Long-term readers may remember that back in 2004, the Ukrainians admitted they had somewhat absent-mindedly mislaid hundreds of nuclear missiles. Based on the available evidence, we have pointed the UN's nuclear watchdog in the direction of this auction, where they can get an example of the electro power source right now for a mere £143,600.
And, if the chaps from bomb disposal are able to get the cover off the thing without taking out an entire city, the truth of the wonderous generator may soon be revealed. ®

FINA's temporary ban bars Zubkov from working as a coach or official under its jurisdiction until a final decision has been made following representations by his lawyer.

In TV footage captured on Tuesday, 38-year-old Zubkov was filmed scuffling with his 20-year-old daughter Kateryna Zubkova at Rod Laver Arena.

Zubkov, who is Kateryna's coach, has already been stripped of his accreditation at the event and banned by Australian officials from making any contact with his daughter. He is due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday where police will seek to extend an intervention order -- forbidding Zubkov from going within 200 meters of his daughter -- until he leaves Australia at the end of the week.

The footage by host broadcaster the Nine Network showed Zubkov swinging and trying to aggressively grab his daughter against her will, and it concluded with the father attempting to comfort the swimmer by embracing her on the floor. The altercation ended when Nine Network staff alerted police.

The woman did not require any medical treatment.

She won her 50-meter backstroke heat on Wednesday, but did not qualify for the semifinals.

Rowing team arrested for illegal entry

KIEV (Reuters) - Ukrainian border guards arrested Belarus's national rowing team Tuesday for illegally entering the country on a flotilla of eight boats.

The border guard service said a coast guard vessel was dispatched to intercept and detain 10 rowers who had crossed into Ukrainian waters on the border with Transdniestria, a region of ex-Soviet Moldova controlled by separatists.

Team members told officials they were unaware they had crossed the border in the southern Ukrainian region. They now face charges in court.

News reports said the Belarussians had been invited to train for the world championship in Transdniestria as reservoirs in their ex-Soviet state, further north, were still covered in ice.

Ukraine's 'oldest man' turns 116!

A man thought to be the oldest living person in the world is celebrating his 116th birthday. Hryhoriy Nestor was born in what is now Ukraine.

The authorities are to mark the occasion by officially recognising him as the oldest person in Ukraine.

They say they have documents that prove that his birthday is on 15 March 1891. An attempt is now being made to get him into the international record books.

Hryhoriy puts his long life down to the fact that he has never been married.

To mark his birthday, Hryhoriy Nestor is having a small party - just a few friends and family will gather at his home.

Austro-Hungarian 'golden era'

Unlike many people from his village in western Ukraine, Hryhoriy has survived a brutal dictatorship, wars and grinding poverty.

In the past, the area was ruled by Poland and the Soviet Union.

But the 116-year-old says that life was best when the region was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire a century ago.

It was only at the age of 100 that he retired from working as a farm labourer.

He is now looked after by a relative.

Hryhoriy, who still has a full head of hair, says that being single has kept him feeling young.

He recommends a diet of milk, cheese and potatoes as well as the occasional shot of vodka.

The members of BYuT faction intend to block electrical control unit of the VRU during all night. Olexander Turchynov a member of BYuT faction told the journalists.

He noted that people’s deputies will be on duty at the electrical control unit. But he refused to tell exactly number of people’s deputies. “If it will be necessary we will be on duty up to the morning,” he said.

Turchynov also said that BYuT proposed the “Our Ukraine” faction to join the duty.

Today in the morning the BYuT and “Our Ukraine” factions continue to block electrical control unit in the VRU, the ForUm’s correspondent informs.

At the entrance of the hall there are several tables the deputies sit at, and near the electrical control unit room the deputies gathered chairs and wooden boards that block it.

Burglar Locks Self In Church For Five Days, Lives On Wine

A Ukrainian burglar who accidently locked himself inside a church survived for five days on sacramental wine before surrendering to police, Sehodnia newspaper reported on Friday.

The break-in specialist's unplanned stay inside a religious building took place in the village of Klevan, in Ukraine's western Rivne province.

The man, identified in the report as a professional thief working under the name Volodymyr, entered Klevan's Christian Orthodox church early in the morning, before Sunday service.

His plan to remove the church's gold fixtures among other valuables went awry after he fell asleep, while attempting to file the lock off of an attic door.

Volodymyr only woke up later in the evening, after church service had been completed and the village priest had locked the building up tight. The Klevan church is closed most weekdays.

The burglar's reported intoxication while committing the break-in contributed to his error, said Myhailo Melnik, a Klevan police spokesman.

A search of the premises by the suspect uncovered interior keys opening the church safe, from which he removed the equivalent of four hundred dollars.

The keys however did not open any exterior locks. Burglar bars and tough doors prevented the man's exit, until priests returned the following Thursday.

During his stay inside the 28-year-old subsisted on dry bread, and a total 12 litres of sacramental wine used during church services.

Volodymyr reportedly confessed his guilt shortly after the priests arrived. He returned the stolen money and surrendered voluntarily to police, Melnik said.

The maximum jail term in Ukraine for breaking and entering is five years, but Volodymyr is hoping the judge hearing his case will show mercy, according to the report.

Warsaw - A drunken Ukrainian trucker wearing nothing but his underpants had a lucky escape after falling from his cabin while driving on a main road in central Poland, local police said on Friday.

The 43-year-old landed directly in front of a car which was trying to overtake his truck, but the vehicle's driver successfully swerved to avoid him, said Mariusz Gierula, spokesman for Plock police.

The Urkainian had 2,5g of alcohol per 1 000g of blood, police said. The blood-alcohol limit in Poland is 0,2g.

As SSU department press-service in Kyiv informed, businessmen had been receiving from Internet international traffic of negotiations with the help of IP-technology and substituted foreign numbers of telephone subscribers to the number of Kyiv providers of fixed and mobile communication.

It gave clients of illegal telephone operators opportunity to reckon international calls as city ones. Cost of minute of talk reduced by four-ten times. Businessmen made money ten thousands of dollars by difference in rates.

When law enforcement in Kyiv cleared up the way of committing a crime, they managed to find and detain plotters in Kharkov. There underground telephone office was situated in the Kyivskiy district of city in the office of commercial firm which was involved into translations from foreign languages. As a result of search, routers, modems and GSM-equipment were seized in the amount of nearly UAH 200,000. Thus substitution of telephone traffic had been carried out.

Investigators at the SSU department in Kyiv have been investigating criminal case on crime secured by the first clause 361 article (unauthorized interference into the work of electronic computers, computer-aided systems, computer networks or electrical communication networks) of the Criminal code of Ukraine.

A Nazi-era sports car which was found in a scrap heap in Ukraine is to be auctioned by Christie’s in Paris next month. The D-type from Audi fore-runner Auto UNI0N, commissioned by Hitler and designed by Ferdinand Porsche, is widely recognised as the grandfather of the modern racing car as it was the first to put the driver in front of the engine. Only around 20 Auto UNI0N series cars were produced in the years leading up to WWII, and during the war they were hidden in a mineshaft by factory workers who didn’t want them used as scrap-metal for the war effort. After the war they were discovered by the Russians who took them to their own country where they vanished, apparently lost forever behind the Iron Curtain. It is thought they were taken apart and studied in a bid to extract knowledge of the hi-tech vehicles. A fanatical American car collector scoured the Ex-Soviet UNI0N searching for the cars, and eventually came across the D-Type, one of only two in existence, lying dismantled in a junkyard in Ukraine. He took the parts to the UK where it was restored to its full glory by experts Crosthwaite and Gardiner. This piece of automobile history is now set to be sold for upwards of twelve million dollars.

Ukrainian police arrested three construction workers for accidentally levelling an apartment building, the Sehodnia newspaper reported Monday.

The incident happened in the historic old town section of the Black Sea port Odessa. A two-story block built in the early 20th century was half flattened.

Labourers working without a permit removed load-carrying walls, internal beams, and roof supports in an attempt to perform major repairs to a second-floor apartment.

A substantial portion of the building caved in, leaving five families homeless. No injuries were reported.

Police arriving to investigate were initially unable to locate the workers, but residents assisted the police in tracking them down.

One construction worker was found hiding in an adjacent apartment building, a second underneath a table in the rubble, while the third had locked himself into the remains of a toilet.
All three were taken to a central police station for questioning.

Central Odessa with its extensive pre-revolutionary architecture is among the most visually charming cities in the former Soviet Union.

Poor maintenance over nearly a century has made sudden collapse a danger in some older buildings, especially if unqualified labourers interfere with sometimes frail internal support walls.

Russian border police on Monday arrested a group of five Ukrainians attempting to smuggle three tons of raw salted pork fat across the international border, the Interfax news agency reported.

The arrests took place in the early morning hours after Russian troops detected three automobiles attempting to exit Russian territory via a field near the village of Gorlovka, in Ukraine's eastern Donetsk province.

Russian law enforcers arriving on the scene halted three GAZ sedans, each crammed with a ton of raw salted pork fat, cut into slabs and wrapped in newspapers.

The GAZ-24 Volga is an economy-sized automobile with a cargo capacity of some 500 kilos.
The three arrested drivers and two passengers explained that the vehicle convoy was moving off-road to reduce travel time back to Gorlovka village, incidentally avoiding border checkpoints in the process.

Russian authorities released the suspects later in the day after filing smuggling charges. The vehicles and fat were impounded.

Raw salted pork fat, or "salo," is considered a delicacy in Ukraine, where it is known as the national food.

Three tons of "salo" would retail in the Ukrainian capital Kiev at approximately nine thousand dollars.

Ukrainian emergency workers saved a drunken swimmer in the Black Sea from an attack by a pod of killer dolphins who were trying to drown him.

The man was reportedly "heavily under the influence of alcohol" at the time. He had braved the near-freezing dolphin-infested waters in the belief they would be good for his health. That's his story and he's sticking to it.

The man was some 30m from the shore when observers noticed his distress as he was harried by a feeding group.

asyl Tenishchev, a spokesman at the Ukrainian Emergency Situations Ministry, said: "If our guys had not been there, the victim surely would have been drowned. The dolphins probably were feeding on fish by cornering schools against the pier and the breakwater, and they saw the man as competition."

Happily, the unfortunate vodka fan escaped the ordeal unharmed, unlike the New Zealand woman who was struck by a 300kg leaping cetacean on a pleasure cruise in the days after Christmas. According to Sydney's Daily Telegraph, she remains in intensive care in Auckland.

The latest dolphin outrage is classic Black Sea dolphin behaviour according to Interfax, the Russian news agency. The mammals "lack the reputation of friendliness and love of humans enjoyed by dolphins in wealthy nations".

Ukrainian animal misadventures have earned their inclusion in the RZSL before. Last June, a man entered the lion enclosure at Kiev zoo proclaiming "God will save me, if he exists". He was promptly savaged.

Sink Hole In Ukraine Capital Swallows Three Automobiles

A massive sink hole suddenly appearing in the Ukrainian capital Kiev swallowed three automobiles, Sehodnia newspaper reported Friday.

The four-metre-wide pit opened up at around 4 a.m. in a parking lot on Volkova street, in a working class neighbourhood.

A Zhiguli four-door, a Volkswagen minibus, and a BMW sedan sank to depth of some two metres below the pavement, and were covered by water.

"I got up in the morning and looked out at the parking lot for my car, and all I saw was its antenna," said the Zhiguli's owner, who identified himself as Vitaly.

A crane hoisted the vehicles out of the hole later in the day. City inspectors arriving on the scene blamed the pavement failure on a broken water main.

All three vehicle owners told reporters they intended to sue the Kiev city water administration damages received by their vehicles, as a result of poor maintenance of the city water supply system.

A statement made public by the Kiev city water utility, Kievvodakanal, blamed the incident on the parking lot operator, who according to Kievvodakanal had broken a city code by running a parking lot directly over a water main.

"We issued no permit to operate a parking lot on ground directly over the water main," a Kievvodakanal official said. "The drivers can try to sue the parking lot owner, but not us."
Privately-run parking lots on questionable territory are ubiquitous in Kiev, which has seen a massive influx of automobiles in recent years, but almost no construction of parking lots.

Hapless drivers searching for a spot often park in places usually forbidden to autos elsewhere in Europe - including sidewalks, traffic circles, and "private" parking lots run by entrepreneurs controlling a bit of city pavement.

Ukrainian Children’s Homes Refuse to Accept Oranges

Directors at four children’s homes in the Ukrainian city of Odessa refused to accept oranges from benefactors as New Year gifts for the children. Orange has become the symbol of the Ukrainian opposition led by presidential contender Viktor Yushchenko.

The Odessa union of businessmen purchased 200 kilograms of oranges for the children’s homes but the household managers refused to take them referring to instructions from their bosses, ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

A director at a home for deaf and dumb children was quoted by the agency as expressing surprise at the businessmen for choosing oranges and not sweets, which they had presented to the children in previous years.

8 Drunk Ukrainians Detained for Bomb Hoax in Moscow Airport

Eight Ukrainian tourists have been taken off a flight from Moscow to Vladivostok after one of them told the police he had a bomb in his luggage. Russian authorities threatened to charge the Ukrainians with terrorism.

The incident happened on board a plane which was to fly from Moscow to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy. They never reached their destination, one of the Ukrainian tourists told Interfax. The aircraft returned to the airport three hours after the take-off for technical reasons, the passengers had been told. Before the flight was to take off again, two Ukrainians were taken off the plane for being drunk.

The two people who were initially taken off the flight were traveling in a group of eight tourists. Police said one of the Ukrainians, who was also drunk, approached an officer and said he had a bomb in his luggage. The aircraft had to be searched and the flight was delayed. Some 200 people could not fly to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy.

All eight Ukrainians were detained and accused of terrorism as the flight was cancelled. Reportedly, the detained included a member of the Kiev regional council.

The detained passengers were taken to the airport’s police station and questioned there. They were not allowed to contact the Ukrainian embassy or Foreign Ministry. Later, five of them were released and three remained in custody as Russian authorities started a criminal case under the article “deliberately false report about a prepared terrorist attack,” a crime that can be punished by a prison term up to three years.

Disinsectant Explosion Destroys Apartment, Cockroaches Survive

A grandmother’s fight against insects in her home has had her rushed to hospital after the anti-cockroaches liquid she was spraying around too generously exploded.

The woman, a 66 years’ old resident of Lvov, Ukraine, had been waging war against roaches for years, neighbors said.

She purchased a new anti-insects spray and before going to bed sprayed it all around the apartment, the Kazanskiye Vedomosti newspaper reports.

She most likely overdid it, because the concentration of dichlorvos got so heavy that it caught fire on the candle the woman had burning in the room.

The powerful explosion broke the doors and windows as well as some of the walls in the apartment. Many of the woman’s possessions burned in the fire. She had to be rushed to hospital with 40 percent of skin burned.

The neighbors however said the roaches survived. The disinsectant exploded before the insects inhaked enough of it.

Ukrainian troops freed American sailors trapped by anti-NATO demonstrators in Crimea Sunday, Scotsman.com news website reported.

Protesters had surrounded a sanatorium where the 120 crew from a visiting navy ship were staying close to the Black Sea port of Feodosiya. The sailors arrived on the U.S. navy cargo ship Advantage on 27 May to bring equipment for a military exercise, Sea Breeze, scheduled for this summer.

But protesters say they should not have been allowed into the country because the parliament, which has been unable to form a government since the 26 March elections, has not authorised the deployment.

Opposition politicians have threatened to impeach the president, Victor Yushchenko, for allowing the U.S. servicemen into the country.

It has been a rough week for the sailors. The night they disembarked, they were forced to evacuate a navy barracks after a bomb threat was phoned in. No bomb was found, but last Friday their buses were stoned by crowds of anti-NATO protesters. Then on Saturday fresh protests blocked a road, forced their buses to turn back from new accommodation, taking them instead to the sanatorium in the town of Alushta.

The Pentagon and Ukraine’s navy insist the deployment is innocuous and will continue.

The American arrival comes with nerves frayed after weeks of bickering in parliament with the country split over whether to align itself with the West or Russia.

Illegal Cossacks Storming Crimea

Prosecutor office of the Crimea found some illegal Cossack unions who took part in raider attacks and provoked conflicts on the peninsula. It was found during check of legality of registration and activity on the territory of Cossack organizations autonomy.

According to the data of press-service at the Crimean prosecutor office, members of two unions pretended they were Cossacks, but their activity was illegal. “Among those illegal Cossacks were people who took part in raider seizer of property and enterprises on the territory of Crimea, provoked some social conflicts”, prosecutor office informed.

Currently people, who used Cossack’s paraphernalia, communicate with militia of the Crimea. Appropriate order was sent by prosecutor office to chief at the Crimean chief committee of the Interior Ministry Vladimir Khomenko. According to press-service’s information, number of registered Cossack unions in the autonomy raised up to 49 since the last check of prosecutor office – the second for this year.

Major of internal service is accused of getting bribe from prisoner to go for a walk in Sumy oblast.

Sumy prosecutor office on supervision over observing laws during fulfillment of court decisions concerning criminal cases finished investigation of suit brought against chief of shop in Konotop correction centre number 130 (Zhovtnevyi settlement Konotopskiy district) of major of internal service according to the second Clause 368 article of the Criminal code of Ukraine.

Wild Animals to be Taken Away in Kyiv!

Kyiv ecologist-cultural centre appealed to Kyiv authority to ban use of wild animals for making photos at their expense on the territory of city. It is said in the address to Kyiv mayor Leonid Chernovetskiy.

“Photographers who use animals just try to make money. So they are absolutely indifferent to animals”, is said in the address.
Centre supposes in accordance with bad maintenance conditions animals suffer and people, who make pictures with them, can be infected. Centre declared that photographers break rules of animals’ maintenance. They are living in the unsuitable conditions. It influences on their behavior negatively and can become the reason of their aggression.

“Owls do not sleep in the afternoon though they should sleep, monkey become frozen as it is cold there, reptiles have extracted teeth and tied mouth”, is said in the statement. Centre appealed also to the social protection department of Kyiv and Shevchenkovskiy district militia department with a request to check facts of inhumane animals’ maintenance by photographers. In the response administration declared that they made investigations along central streets in Kyiv where people make photos with animals and they did not find violations of legislation on animals’ protection.
“Wild animals are being used by photographers. They have satisfactory state. Experts did not find any bodily injuries”, is said in the message of social protection department.

Kyiv council commission on ecology policy supposes that Kyiv council cannot ban making photos with animals when photographers have license to do it and veterinary certificate of animals’ health.

Commission’s chairman Anatoliy Kovalenko supposes that Kyiv city state administration should control this problem carefully.

As a reminder, Kyiv council sent municipal enterprise Priyut dlya zhivotnykh (Asylum for animals) in rent 0,8 ha on Syretskaya street, 31-a for constructing centre of veterinary examination and captured animals.

Boom! Monument to URA Soldiers Stolen in Kharkov

Unknowns stole monument to URA (Ukrainian rebellious army) heroes in Kharkov today at night. Monument is found in the evening.

According to evidence of eye-witnesses and workers, who restore monument, its basic part (stone) and granite stele with inscription “For Ukrainian rebellious army” were found in the pit near monument.

Anonymous e-mail letter was sent to several mass-media sources on December, 20. It was said pit was dig out near base with the help of excavator. Monument was thrown there with the help of scraps. Then pit was covered with ground. Authors of letter stated that this move was timed to KGB Serviceman Day.

Workers have dig pit out with the help of evacuator and bulldozer, seized parts of monument, put territory in order and set monument at its place now.

As a reminder, monument to URA soldiers had been set in Molodyozhnyi park in Kharkov in 1992.

Organizers of the “Little life’s big heart” – an artistic competition for children from orphanages and boarding-schools all over Ukraine announced its results on Friday in Kyiv.
Nine-year-old Oleksandr Andriychuk won first prize with an imaginary letter to his abusive father now in jail. Over the past three months, competition organizers received over 13,000 essays and drawings from children without parents. After this year’s success, the competition is sure to be repeated. Next year, organizers plan to add singing and dancing to the competition. The goal of the event is to help prevent children from feeling lonely during the holiday season.

Tiger tears off photographer's ear at Ukraine zoo

Kiev- A Bengal Tiger living in a Ukrainian zoo tore the ear off of an intoxicated photographer falling into the animal's enclosure by accident, Sehodnia newspaper reported Monday. The incident took the city zoo of the Black Sea port Mykolaev after the victim, identified in the report only by his first name Oleg, climbed to the top of the tiger enclosure's six-metre wall in an attempt to take close up snap shots.

The man, described by eyewitnesses as "highly intoxicated", lost his balance and fell into the enclosure, which contained three tigers at the time.

Two of the big cats ignored the intruder, but a fifteen-year old tigress named Alfa reacted aggressively and bit Oleg in the head.

The photographer fought back and called on onlookers for assistance. Members of the general public threw bottles at the tiger, without effect.

Zoo staff were on the scene and gave the tiger a tranquilizer injection shortly after the attack. The tiger released the photographer and an emergency medical team transported Oleg and his severed ear to a city hospital.

Police arriving before the tranquilizers took effect offered to shoot dead the tiger Alfa, a suggestion rejected by zoo personnel.

Surgeons reattached the photographer's ear and closed "numerous deep wounds" in a two hour operation. Oleg reportedly faced "several months in hospital...but is expected to recover fully," according to the article.

Vetrinarians inspecting the tiger found the big cat had strained muscles in a rear limb "and suffered significant stress." The animal otherwise was healthy and Oleg was in no danger of rabies, said Valentina Yakunina, director of the Mykolaev zoo large carnivores' division.

Injuries to Ukrainian zoo visitors from dangerous animals are infrequent, but they do occur, almost always because an intoxicated person had climbed into the animals' enclosure, or tried to feed a zoo animal by hand.

Healthy new-born babies may have been killed in Ukraine to feed a flourishing international trade in stem cells, evidence obtained by the BBC suggests.
Disturbing video footage of post-mortem examinations on dismembered tiny bodies raises serious questions about what happened to them.
Ukraine has become the self-styled stem cell capital of the world.
There is a trade in stem cells from aborted foetuses, amid unproven claims they can help fight many diseases.
But now there are claims that stem cells are also being harvested from live babies.
The BBC has spoken to mothers from the city of Kharkiv who say they gave birth to healthy babies, only to have them taken by maternity staff.
In 2003 the authorities agreed to exhume around 30 bodies of foetuses and full-term babies from a cemetery used by maternity hospital number six.
One campaigner was allowed into the autopsy to gather video evidence. She has given that footage to the BBC and Council of Europe.
In its report, the Council describes a general culture of trafficking of children snatched at birth, and a wall of silence from hospital staff upwards over their fate.
The pictures show organs, including brains, have been stripped - and some bodies dismembered.
A senior British forensic pathologist says he is very concerned to see bodies in pieces - as that is not standard post-mortem practice.
It could possibly be a result of harvesting stem cells from bone marrow.

Luhansk: Miners see sun after a week below ground

Twelve of fourteen miners who have been striking two hundred meters below ground for a week in Luhansk oblast left the mine on Thursday. They did so after the deputy Coal industry minister paid them a visit.
The miners refused to leave the shaft until some ten months of back wages worth nearly two million hryvnia is paid. Deputy minister Volodymyr Fichov traveled to Luhansk to mitigate the situation. A solution was apparently found during a meeting held in the Luhansk oblast administration. Two miners remained in the shaft to pump water out of the mine. Operations at the privately-owned mine in Krasnopolyevsk have been suspended.

Latest events, which have happened in Kharkov, shocked both citizens and statesmen. Criminals hunt at statesmen.

As MIGnews.com.ua informed, unknowns shot down building of city executive committee and city council in the centre of Kharkov yesterday. Due to the efficiency of law enforcement, as a result of incident three people are detained. Militia seized shooting pistol with rubber bullets.

In a day new emergency happened in Kharkov again: unknown shot at deputy chief of oblast tax militia.

As Novyi region informs, emergency happened in one of the restaurants in Kharkov at night. As a result first deputy chief of the oblast militia department in the State tax administration in Kharkov oblast Oleg Malets is wounded because of rubber bullet. His colleague, chief at one of the tax departments also is wounded. Unknown shot at his head.

Both officials are hospitalized. Doctors state their wounds do not threat victims’ life. Law enforcement try to clear up the reason of emergency.

Dnipropetrovsk: Thieves steal telephone cable for scrap metal
Telephone cable thieves have left more than 5,000 residents of Dnipropetrovsk without telephone service.
Police say that 88 lengths of copper cable have been stolen in different locations throughout the city in the past few days. In the last nine months. More than 400 complaints on the theft of cables have been registered in Dnipropetrovsk. Police say the thieves are stealing the cable for the copper – they turn it in for 20 hryvnia per kilogram at scrap metal yards. Full telephone service is expected to be restored in one week’s time.

Italian caught trying to smuggle girl
Border service guards arrested a citizen of Italy at Boryspil airport as he tried to smuggle a 13 year old girl out of the country.
The Italian was due to fly to Prague and told border guards that the girl is his daughter. They became suspicious when the girl told them in Ukrainian that she had lost her travel documents. Upon being arrested, the Italian confessed that he arrived in Ukraine in September to take the girl out of the country and pass her on to a woman. Border guards have determined the girl’s identity. The Kirovohrad native said that her family told her to “listen to the man and everything will be well.” The border guard service said that it has thwarted nearly 2,000 similar attempts to smuggle people out of the country since the beginning of the year.

Lviv: WW2 weapons cache found in roof
Construction workers in Lviv uncovered a clandestine weapons cache from the Second World War while working on the roof of a vacant building in the center of the city.
Emergency services were alerted and the residents of adjacent buildings were immediately evacuated. Emergency workers found 18 German grenades and more than 500 German and French-made bullets. Radio equipment was also found. The hardware was described as being in excellent condition. But local historians were most excited by the maps and documents found in the store. Based on the documents, researchers believe the roof-top bunker was last used in 1944.

An emergency services training session called “Halychyna Paramedic Rally 2006” is underway in the city of Lviv.
Paramedic teams from Lviv, Kyiv, Rivne, Zhytomyr and the Polish city of Lublin are taking part in the event. Each team’s skills and speed will be challenged in four different scenarios, in which real emergency situations will be simulated. At each stage, the team will have to locate the person needing aid, provide a diagnosis, and offer the appropriate treatment. Participants say that the experience will help them in their every day work. It is the first time such a rally is being held in Ukraine.

Odesa: Man crushed by billboard

A man died and another was injured in Odesa on Monday when a billboard collapsed onto the sidewalk.

Strong winds are thought to have caused the accident that occurred near the port city’s central train station. The 28 year old victim died on the spot. The other victim sustained head injuries. His condition was described as serious but stable. Emergency service workers said the outdoor advertisements were improperly installed.

Lviv: Football fans protest higher rent for “Karpaty” club

Fans of the Lviv Karpaty football club pitched tents in front of city hall and announced an ongoing protest on Monday.
They are demanding that Lviv city hall provide the club with a long-term lease for the stadium where the Karpaty currently play. City hall wants to collect one hundred and twenty five thousand hryvnia in rent every month from the club. The club presumably cannot afford the rent which stands at the equivalent of twenty five thousand dollars every month. The demonstrators say that the club may be forced to play at a stadium in Ivano-Frankivsk. Nine tents were pitched in front of Lviv city hall.

Lviv oblast: Pole caught smuggling 9,000 mobile phones

The State security service SBU seized a shipment of nine thousand contraband mobile telephones in Lviv oblast.

A Polish man attempted to smuggle the cell phones into the country by hiding them in his mini-bus. The value of the contraband phones was estimated to be six million hryvnia – that’s more than a million US dollars. It’s the biggest catch of bootleg phones so far this year. Lutsk: Three tons of opium poppy straw destroyed

Meanwhile in Lutsk, police uncovered some three tons of poppy straw at a farm in that city.

According to estimates, the straw could have been used to make narcotics with a street value between five and six million hryvnia. That’s more than a million dollars. The opium poppy straw was found buried near a cow barn. There is one enterprise in Volyn oblast with a license to grow poppies. Instead of burning the straw, workers took the processed plants to a nearby farm and hid it. A criminal investigation has been launched. The company may lose its license to grow poppies.

Odesa: Five dead as they attempt to siphon oil

Five people were poisoned as they attempted to siphon oil from a pipeline near Odesa.
The men apparently sought to cut into the pipeline from an unused sewage system. They were found dead with welding equipment and one hundred meters of plastic hose. Emergency service workers suspect they were poisoned by fumes. Their identities have yet to be established.

Soldier beaten to death at training camp

Two tragedies to report from the country’s military: one soldier was killed and another was shot by their superiors in two seperate incidents that occured in the past week.

Recruit Oleksandr Rybka was beaten to death at the Desna training camp in Chernihiv oblast. Two sergeants are suspected of the murder. The eighteen year old was unable to get out of bed on Monday morning and died in the camp’s hospital a few hours later. Doctors said his death was caused by his liver bursting. The two sergeants are suspected of beating him before he went to bed. Both men are in custody.

Several thousand Hutzuls from around the world descended upon the village of Pechynizhyn in the Carpathian Mountains. A man is in the re-animation ward a hospital in Dnipropetrovsk after being injured by a rocket explosion.

The explosion occurred at the Aero-space center of the national Space agency in that city. The man was sawing the rocket when the blast happened. Ukrainian Busted in CarderPlanet Online Fraud Ring

Ukrainian police have arrested a man suspected of launching an international online fraud ring. U.S. law enforcers said earlier the CarderPlanet website served as a marketplace for millions of stolen bank accounts. Many of the accounts were stolen by hackers who targeted dozens of banks, e-commerce sites and government agencies.

Dmitry Golubov, arrested in Ukraine earlier this month, is believed to be one of the founders of the CarderPlanet.com site, the Delovaya Nedelya newspaper reports.

The Wall Street Journal wrote last week that CarderPlanet boasted roughly 7,000 members and served as a marketplace for millions of stolen accounts, according to Larry Johnson, special agent in charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s criminal investigative division.

Many of the stolen accounts came from hackers who targeted dozens of organizations such as banks, e-commerce sites and government agencies in the U.S., U.K. and Australia. Stolen account information can sell online for as little as a few dollars and as much as several hundred dollars.

CaderPlanet was closed last year but the U.S. authorities continued chasing its founders worldwide, Delovaya Nedelya wrote.

U.S. Postal Inspector Paul Crenn reported that Dmitry Golubov who took an active part in CarderPlanet operations under the nickname of Script was arrested on July 7.

Delovaya Nedelya failed to get in touch with Golubov’s defense lawyers. Ukrainian authorities refused to comment while the U.S. officials did not rule out that more arrests would follow in the near future in Ukraine.

CarderPlanet was set up in 2001. A man by the name of Douglas Cade Havard, 22, has pleaded guilty to fraud and money laundering and is now in a Leeds prison cell in Great Britain.

At 19, Havard was honing counterfeiting skills he learned in online chat rooms, making fake IDs in Texas for fellow underage college students who wanted to drink alcohol, Wall Street Journal reported. By 21, Havard had parlayed those skills to a lucrative position at CarderPlanet.com. Having reached a senior rank in the largely Russian and Eastern European organization, he was driving a Mercedes and spending hundreds of dollars on champagne at clubs.

Ukrainian Editor Says Bentley Destroyed Over Photos of Yushchenko’s Son

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko ordered a high-level investigation on Oct. 2 into the attack on a car owned by the editor of a celebrity tabloid that was allegedly planning a photo expose on the president’s teenage son, Associated Press reported.

Yushchenko asked Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko to personally take control of the investigation, saying it must be conducted as thoroughly and quickly as possible “to make impossible any kind of speculation around it.”

Walid Harfouch, managing editor of the magazine Paparazzi, said that his Bentley was damaged by a homemade fire bomb early on Sept. 30, according to the media rights group Reporters Without Borders. The group cited Harfouch, a Lebanese citizen, as saying he believed the attack was linked to the planned publication of Turkey vacation photographs of Yushchenko’s son, Andriy, and his girlfriend.

No one could be reached for comment at the Kiev police department or the tabloid this weekend.

The magazine’s forthcoming issue had been discussed in a story on tabloid journalism in Kiev’s English language weekly newspaper last month. Reporters without Borders said that afterward Paparazzi’s staff immediately began coming under pressure to scrap the article.

“For the president, the principle of free speech in immutable,” said the president’s spokeswoman Irina Gerashchenko. “He and his family would never allow anyone to try to pressure journalists about any kind of material.” She said they had only learned about the planned article after the attack on the editor’s car.

She urged the magazine’s editor to make a formal complaint to police about the alleged pressure, adding that it would also help remove any suspicions that the magazine was trying “to lift its ratings at the expense of a scandal around a well-known family.”

“We very much hope that soon this next issue will appear exactly in such a scope and format as was originally envisioned,” Gerashchenko said.

Yushchenko’s teenage son sparked a scandal earlier this summer when a Ukrainian Internet site reported on his allegedly lavish lifestyle, sparking an angry outburst from Yushchenko. The president later apologized.

Residents in a Ukrainian city of Simferopol have been visiting a bathhouse made of cemetery tombstones for over 70 years, the Novy Region news agency reports.

The weird fact became known when the building was demolished to give way to a modern hotel. Construction workers said that the ground floor and the cellar of the building had been built entirely of tombstones taken from the city cemetery.

The bathhouse was built in the 1930s and the stone from the quarry was expensive so the builders used tombstones. Historians claim that the bathhouse is not the only building created this way and that even some residential buildings in the city have tombstones in their walls.

Historians say that Christian and Jewish tombstones were discovered as the building was raised. The oldest found tombstone is dated 1806.

A court in Kiev found Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko guilty of corruption on Monday, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reports.

Lutsenko’s lawyer, Yuriy Berhelson, has told the press that the Pecherskyy district court ordered the minister to pay a fine of 340 Hryvnas (about $67). The lawyer said the decision was “political” and that the court found that Lutsenko’s motives were not “selfish”.

Earlier, Deputy Prosecutor-General Renat Kuzmin accused Lutsenko of unlawfully promoting Interior Ministry officers and “presenting pistols to citizens who have no right to bear firearms”.

Oksana Golubova, a beautiful blonde and head of the local Greenpeace office in Ukraine’s largest seaside resort area of Crimea, was attempting to protect the peninsula’s nature from careless tourist attitude.

The girl posed as a model for a series of posters together with dead animals and birds. The message she intended to send to the world was human holidays are a threat to nature, the Express Gazeta newspaper reports.

However instead of feeling guilty, the authorities and residents of the peninsula, where tourism is the only source of income, cracked down on the activist herself. She was accused of being immoral, unpatriotic and of trying to ruin the region’s economy.

If Golubova continues her agitation, Crimea’s Prime Minister Viktor Plakida has said, he will personally see that she gets deported from the peninsula.

Oksana, who did not expect such an emotional reaction, tries to leave house as rarely as possible.

“I just wanted to make people who come to spend their holidays in the Crimea treat its nature with more consideration,” Oksana says.

“I wanted to stop the authorities from pouring sewage into the sea. But unfortunately people care more about drawing money from tourists than about leaving a clean sea to their children.”

ZURICH (Reuters) - After 40 years rattling through the streets of Zurich and past a church where writer James Joyce is buried, a fleet of ageing Swiss trams is to find a new lease of life in a provincial Ukrainian town.

Zurich's city council said it is donating 13 trams to the town of Vinnitsa, 250 km southwest of Kiev where they will enter service next year and are expected to run for at least 12 more years.

The trams are being retired from the number 5 route running across town to Fluntern, an upscale neighbourhood on a hill where Joyce, who wrote part of his literary masterpiece Ulysses in Zurich and died there in 1941, is buried.

Another free consignment of up to 15 trams will be delivered by the end of 2008. Unlike some European cities, such as Milan and Lisbon, where trams dating from the 1930s are still in service, Zurich's trams are routinely withdrawn after 40 years

UZHHOROD, Ukraine Valentyn Shtefano's pastries were known for attracting stares, giggles and lip-smacking murmurs of "yum" in this western Ukrainian city. But even his bride-to-be was surprised when Shtefano told her he was making her wedding dress — out of flour, eggs, sugar and caramel.

The edible dress — made of 1,500 cream puffs and weighing in at 20 pounds (9 kilograms) — took the 28-year-old baker two months to make, and by the end of the wedding reception, bride Viktoriya didn't want to take it off, much less devour it.

Shtefano, his fingernails permanently stained with food coloring, is eager to introduce new sweets to this city of 125,000 people. He took a three-month baking course in Paris and entered an international baking competition last year with his sister, who lives in the French capital. The siblings made a 2-foot-long (0.61-meter), 1920s-era Cadillac from cream puffs and caramel. They won third place.
Shtefano's cakes have evolved with his experience. His first baking job six years ago was at a pizzeria where he made US$40 (€31.50) per month. He quit after the owner refused to give him a raise. Now he splits his time between two restaurants and works his own schedule, delighting this town with his culinary treats.

Shtefano's cakes are more art than dessert. Sure, some might be for a mature audience, like a pair of breasts on display at the pizzeria. But Shtefano also created an elaborate cake for Easter that drew hundreds to a local cathedral. It was a black and gold globe hatching from an Easter egg, with pieces of eggshell on top of the globe and falling off to the side. It was too pretty to eat.

"At first, it was even a little embarrassing," Viktoriya Shtefano said of the dress she wore to the couple's reception at Uzhhorod's 1,200-year-old castle, attracting a rush of local media attention in August. "Cameras, interviews, but after a couple of hours, I didn't even want to take it off."

The wedding dress is now being stored in Shtefano's cramped apartment, which he shares with his parents and new bride, until he can find a mannequin on which to display it in the pizzeria's window.

Shtefano hopes to someday open a business with his sister in Ukraine, believing there's more room for skillful bakers in Ukraine than in Paris.

"Here you can buy jobs," he said. "You want to be president, governor, (parliament) deputy, OK.

Kozak-Native Faith camp underway

A kozak-native faith camp for young Ukrainians is underway near Kyiv.
Aspiring kozaks from all over Ukraine learn kozak-style martial arts as well as attending seminars on psychology, leadership and socionics. They also practice the native faith of their ancestors around a campfire, by singing hymns to the gods Perun, Stryboh and Rid. Camp leader Tverdoslav Filatov said they even learn to control the weather, thoughts, and practice mind reading. He hopes all these skills will develop camp participants into Ukraine's future elite. Campers said they were very glad to be at camp despite being tired from all the activities.

Kharkiv lumberjack wins national championships

And finally, the finals of the national lumberjack competition were held in Kyiv oblast on Tuesday. The winner will represent Ukraine in the lumberjack world championship scheduled to be held in Belgium in 2008.
Thirty-five tree-cutters from across the country competed in the events. The competition consisted of five events, including contests for speed and the changing of chains on chain saws. The other events required precision cutting as competitors removed branches and cut logs in exact halves. For the final event, the lumberjacks were required to saw through logs without damaging a wood board resting underneath. When all was sawed and done, Serhiy Domashkin from Kharkiv emerged the winner. He was awarded with a new chainsaw and three thousand hryvnia in cash – about six hundred dollars. Domashkin will continue felling trees in his native Kharkiv prior to leaving for the world championships in 2008.

Donetsk: 4 prisoners dead after drinking construction glue

Four prisoners in Donetsk oblast died on the weekend after drinking alcohol made from construction glue.
In total, six prisoners of the Dzerzhynsk correctional facility drank the alcohol they had prepared using “Drakon” construction glue as the source. Two of the men survived and are currently in hospital. The men found the glue that was used for renovating the visitors’ area of the prison. A criminal investigation of the incident is underway.

Crimea: 3 killed while taking apart bomb

In Crimea, three people died after they attempted to take apart an aviation bomb.
The incident occurred in the village of Kirove. Two of the victims had brought the bomb to an underground scrap metal yard, when the explosion occurred. The scrap metal seekers apparently thought the bomb was a dummy used for training at a nearby naval base. They began taking the bomb apart using a blow torch when it exploded. A woman who lived at the illegal scrap metal yard also died in the blast. The explosion left a four meter deep hole, destroyed four houses and half the windows in the village.

Man found with 10 kg of TNT in Kherson oblast

Police in the town of Tsyurupynsk, Kherson oblast have caught and arrested a local resident with more than ten kilograms of TNT in his possession.
He said he got the explosive material from ammunition which he found an abundance of in a nearby forest and that he was planning on using it to heat his house this winter. Experts say that the amount of explosive material found in his possession is enough to blow up the whole town. The man previously had problems with the law.

Donetsk: Russian shoots Armenian businessman

Prosecutors in Donetsk have initiated criminal proceedings in the Monday shooting of businessman Samvel Adamian in the eastern city. Both Adamian and his would-be assassin are currently in hospital.
The shooting occurred after 3 PM outside of the offices of Donbasnaftoprodukt – a firm widely believed to be owned by Adamian. He was shot in the chest as he exited his car. Guards form the building ran out upon hearing the shots and returned fire, injuring the attacker. Police recovered two pistols, two passports and two mobile phones at the seen of the crime. The possibility that a second attacker took part in the shooting is being invesitgated. Donetsk prosecutor Oleksandr Ol’mezov said that the injured assasin is a citizen of the Russian Federation. Adamian is a leading member of the Armenian Diaspora in Donetsk, who has himself reportedly been convicted of crimes in the past. Adamian has also reportedly survived an assassination attempt in the past.

Donetsk: Weightlifter throws and catches 150 kg on neck

A new Ukrainian record was set in Donetsk this week by weightlifter Dmytro Khaladzhi. The big boy from Donbas successfully threw a barbell with 150 kilograms over his head and caught the entire weight on the back of his neck.
The previous record in the unique lift was held by Russian Valentyn Dikul who endured 112 kilograms. Khaladzhi prepared for the record breaking feat gradually, starting off with 40, then 80 then 120 kilogram weights, before attempting 150 kilos – more than 330 pounds. The new record is not Khaladzhi’s first. His name is reportedly twice recorded in the Guinness book of records. He is apparently the only person on the planet who can lift a 150 kilogram stone with one arm. But the record he is most proud of was set in his childhood. As a child burn victim, Khaladzhi survived twelve blood transfusions. Doctors were apparently skeptical about his chances for survival, but Khaladzhi went on to become one of the strongest athletes in the world. For his next feat, Khaladzhi intends on having ten cars drive across a wooden bridge placed upon his chest while lying down on broken glass

Odesa: Leopard attacks zoo worker
On Monday a leopard in Odesa attacked a worker at the zoo in the port city.
The man had entered the cage to feed the big cat. He is currently in a local hospital with 30 stitches on one of his arms. Doctors say that his life is not in danger. Officials say the man may have failed to follow security procedures prior to feeding the leopard.
